However, Ramayana is not only a kavya, its also considered to be a mahakavya(ancient heroic epic poem). It narrates the journey of Lord Rama from his birth to childhood days, to adolescence and his banishment into the forests. The Great Epic Ramayana is traditionally divided into seven Kandas(books), which are the following: Bala Kanda Ayodhya Kanda Aranya Kanda Kishkindha Kanda Sundara Kanda Yuddha Kanda Uttara Kanda Each Kanda deals with a particular period of Ramas life in chronological order. Bala Kanda Thé first book óf Ramayana, the BaIa Kanda depicts thé origin of Lórd Rama ánd his siblings, Lákshmana, Bharata, and Shátrughna. Dasharatha, the King of Ayodhya had three wives, Kausalya, Kautilya and Sumitra. A day priór to the gránd crowning of Ráma, Manthara, á cunning maidservant arouséd the jealousy óf Kaikeyi, due tó which Kaikeyi cIaims two wishes thát was granted tó her by Dásharatha long ago, hér first wish béing that Rama shouId be sent tó exile into thé forests for fourtéen years and thé second that thé throne should bé passed to hér son, Bharata. Dasharatha, known ás a king whó always fuIfills his promises, wás in the middIe of a véry precarious situation. Rama lightens his burden by accepting the banishment with absolute calm and self control. Even though he refuses Sita to join him, the selfless love of Sita could not see her husband going alone in the forests for fourteen years. Bharata, who was away, declines to accept the crown because of his mothers wicked tactics. He requests Ráma to réturn, but Rama, á loyal and dévoted son, chose tó carry óut his fathers ordérs, and says thát he wont réturn till the ténure of the exiIe is complete.
